I’m sure you have heard all about Barre before, but what exactly is it and what are the benefits? Gympass speak to Frame’s co-founder Pip Black to find out why it is the must go to class

What is Barre?

Barre delivers a full body workout through a series of low-impact movements. It is a hybrid workout which combines ballet-inspired movements with elements of Pilates, dance, yoga and strength training designed to sculpt the entire body.

Why is it important to incorporate low impact workouts?

It works, for one! But Barre also puts less stress and pressure on tendons, ligaments and joints and actually helps stabilise and strengthen through the emphasis of technique of the class. It works muscular endurance and the focus on the pulses means there’s no burn quite like “Barre burn”…!

Mentally, a lot of people in the city have high stress jobs that keep them in that “fight or flight” mode of the sympathetic nervous system. Workouts like Barre, yoga and pilates help a person de-stress, promote rest and bring them in their parasympathetic nervous system.

Are the classes as hard as HIIT classes?

In high intensity classes such as HIIT,  the emphasis tends to be on speed, the technique sometimes gets compromised as a person reaches muscle fatigue. Barre has such a strong emphasis on technique and slower muscle twitch fibres that performing an exercise slower and in correct alignment can often prove more challenging.

Does Barre solely focus my legs or will I see changes in other parts of my body?

Frame Barre is a full body workout, there is no muscle left untouched! However, there is always a strong emphasis on the glutes as well as core stability and strength.
